TERTULIA: The Power of Faith – El Poder de la Fe

“Yes Lord”, replied the Syrophoenician woman (a Greek) to Jesus, “but even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” From Gospel of St. Mark 7:28

Last year (2012) for two days, our UCC Hispanic/Latino brothers and sisters from New England, gathered and talked much about what it meant to be a family in Christ as UCC’ers! We struggled with what is meant to be born again, especially when dealing with those that we find who are different than we are. Is it possible to be Gay Lesbian Bi Transgendered and Christian? Are GLBTQ peoples required to change to be considered folks of Faith? And why do we care so much?

We didn’t solve anything that weekend, but we had an open and honest dialogue (a Tertulia). I was asked to give my testimony as a man of faith, who happens to be a Pastor, Latino, and Gay! Instead of focusing on “justification” for my right to be called a saved child of God, my story was the journey of family, of a family’s plea, and how due to the Miracle of Grace, a family was brought healing, reconciliation, and love because we chose to have faith in God; a willingness to ask Christ to help us understand each other and be healed.

In the Gospel of Mark, chapter 7: 24-29, we have this Greek woman, with a daughter being afflicted emotionally. She heard about this Healer, this Man of God, healing the blind, the disabled and the afflicted! She didn’t care Jesus was “different” from her, only that Jesus could heal her daughter.
So she went to Jesus and begged him to heal her daughter! Jesus actually “paused”, and said to the woman “First let the children eat all they want, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and feed it to the dogs. ”Jesus just called this woman a dog.

But this woman took no offense, instead she said “Even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs” … meaning…THINK ME UNWORTHY…BUT JUST PROVIDE ME ONE BLESSING….ONE WORD…I’M NOT ASKING FOR A FULL SENTENCE…BUT JUST SAY THE “CRUMB”…AND MY DAUGHTER WILL BE HEALED! “Jesus marveled at the faith of this woman…and said ‘For such a reply, you may go, the demon has left your daughter.’” “And she went home and found her child lying on the bed and the demon was GONE! “ The Syrophoenician woman was given her daughter back! Notice that Jesus did not require her to change who she was to be blessed and receive the miracle. He simply said because of your faith, your daughter is healed.

” Sí señor”, respondió la mujer siro-fenicia ( griego ) a Jesús “, pero también los perritos comen bajo la mesa migajas de los hijos . ” de Evangelio según San Marcos 07:28

El año pasado ( 2012 ) durante dos días , nuestro UCC Latino / Latina hermanos y hermanas de Nueva Inglaterra, se reunieron y hablaron mucho acerca de lo que significa ser una familia en Cristo como miembros de la UCC. Lidiamos con el significado de la frase “nacer de nuevo,” sobre todo cuando se trata de aquellos que encontramos que son diferentes de lo que somos. ¿Es posible ser Homosexual, Lesbianas, Bisexual, Transexuales, y cristianos(as)? Es necesario que aquellos y aquellas que identificamos con estas etiquetas cambien antes de ser considerados(as) gente de fe? ¿Y por qué esto nos importa tanto?

No resolvimos esos conflictos durante ese fin de semana, pero tuvimos un diálogo abierto y honesto (Tertulia). Me pidieron que diera mi testimonio como un hombre de fe, que es un pastor latino y homosexual. En lugar de centralizarme en la ” justificación” de mi derecho de ser llamado hijo salvado de Dios, mi historia era de la trajectoria de una familia, de la petición de una familia, y como debido al milagro de la gracia de Dios, esa familia recibió sanidad, reconciliación y amor porque escogimos tener fe en Dios y la disposición de pedirle a Cristo que nos ayudara a entendernos los unos a los otros y ser sanados.

En el Evangelio de Marcos, capítulo 7: 24-29, tenemos esta mujer griega , con una hija afectada emocionalmente. Oyó hablar de este sanador, este hombre de Dios , que sanaba a los ciegos , los discapacitados y los afligidos ! No le importaba que Jesús fuera ” diferente” de ella, sólo que Jesús podía sanar a su hija. ¡Así que se acercó a Jesús y le rogó que sanara a su hija ! Jesús realmente pausó, y dijo a la mujer: “En primer lugar deja que los niños coman todo lo que quieran , porque no está bien tomar el pan de los hijos y alimentar a los perros . ” Jesús acaba de llamar a esta mujer un perro. Pero esta mujer no se ofendió, a pesar de eso dijo: ” Hasta los perrillos debajo de la mesa, comen las migajas de los hijos ” … queriendo decir… PIENSA DE MI QUE SOY INDIGNA … PERO SOLO DAME UNA BENDICIÓN …. una palabra … Yo no estoy pidiendo una frase completa … PERO SOLO DI LAS ” MIGAJAS ” … y mi hija será sanada ! ” Jesús se maravilló de la fe de esta mujer … y dijo:” Por decir eso, ahora vete, el demonio ha salido de tu hija . ‘ ” “¡Y se fue a su casa, encontró a la niña acostada en la cama, y el demonio se había ido! ” A la mujer siro- fenicia se le regresó su hija ! Note que Jesús no exigió que ella cambiara quien era para ser bendecida y recibir su milagro. Él simplemente dijo que debido a su fe, su hija sanó .

Oración: Amado Dios, como sus hijos(as) nos proporcionas más que migajas, nos proporcionas banquete de bendiciones, y por estas bondades damos gracias en el nombre de Jesús. Amén.
