The year 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The words spoken by Dr. King in 1963 still resonate today; I believe he called on everyone to not only be peaceful but to also be accountable.
Recently I was browsing through my Facebook account and I encountered something that struck a nerve. A Hispanic woman uploaded pictures of a day trip she took with her family. Her picture comments identified people by name, but some family members were identified in a slightly different manner. Family members of dark colored skin were identified first by the color of their skin and then by their names. As I continued to look at the pictures, I was reminded of the underlying and acquired racism that is still rampant in the Latino community. Phrases of yesteryear that were used as terms of endearment continue to perpetuate the division between Black and White within Hispanic communities today.
I hold myself accountable to refuse the perpetuating cycle of injustice in the Latino community. I will seek wisdom from above to treat my fellow brothers and sisters from other Hispanic origins with equality regardless of the color of their skin or their immigration status. I will seek to make peace and sow the seeds of justice with my peaceful acts.
We all need to be accountable to bring Dr. King’s dream to fruition.

Prayer: Loving God, thank you for keeping Dr. King’s dream alive but we are fully aware that much work needs to be done. Give us the strength, wisdom, and tenacity to hold ourselves accountable for our actions. Our fight for justice includes our Hispanic brothers and sisters who have no voice because of their immigration status. Remind us that we are all part of the body of Christ regardless of color, creed, gender, or sexual orientation. In your name we pray, Amen!

El año 2013 marca el 50 aniversario del discurso dado por el Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. titulado “Tengo un Sueño”. Las palabras exhortadas por Dr. King en 1963 son todavía relevantes hoy, y creo que nos hizo un llamado a todos, no sólo para estar en paz, pero también para que nos rindamos a cuentas de nuestra responsabilidad.
Hace poco estaba navegando a través de mi cuenta de Facebook y me encontré con algo que me molesto al ver y leerlo. Una mujer hispana puso fotos de una excursión que tuvo con su familia. Ella identifico a personas en su familia por sus nombres, pero algunos miembros de la familia fueron identificados de una manera sutilmente diferente. Los miembros de la familia con la piel oscura fueron identificados primero por el color de su piel y luego por sus nombres. A medida que continuaba mirando las fotos, me di de cuenta del racismo profundo y adquirido que todavía existe en la comunidad latina. Frases antiguas que fueron utilizados como expresiones de cariño siguen perpetuando la división entre blancos y negros dentro de las comunidades hispanas
Me hago responsable de rechazar el ciclo de perpetuación de la injusticia en la comunidad latina. Voy a buscar la sabiduría de lo alto para tratar a mis hermanos y hermanas de otros orígenes hispanos con igualdad sin importar el color de su piel o su estatus migratorio. Voy a tratar de hacer la paz y sembrar las semillas de la justicia con mis actos pacíficos. Todos tenemos que ser responsables para que el sueño del Dr. King un día se haga realidad.

Oración: Amado Dios, gracias por mantener el sueño de Dr. King vivo, pero somos plenamente conscientes de que hay mucho trabajo por hacer. Danos la fuerza, la sabiduría y tenacidad para hacernos responsables de nuestras acciones. Nuestra lucha por la justicia incluye a nuestros hermanos y hermanas hispanos que no tienen voz, debido a su estatus migratorio. Siempre haznos recordar que todos somos parte del cuerpo de Cristo sin importar el color de piel, el credo, el género o la orientación sexual. En Tu nombre oramos, ¡Amén!
