“Wonderful!” his master replied. “You are a good and faithful servant. I left you in charge of only a little, but now I will put you in charge of much more. Come and share in my happiness!” from Matthew 25:11
I had a million excuses why achieving higher education was not the correct path for me. I felt defeated because of the circumstances of my past and I had given up on my future. One day my boss gave me an ultimatum; “Go back to school; your employee evaluation will be dependent on it!” I was in disbelief! Go back to school, why me? At that very moment I paused and recalled that in my prayers I asked God to use me, to help me actualize his will over my life. My prayers were being answered but not the way I ever imagined and I had a decision to make.
On that day, the Lord used my manager to deliver a message that I would hear loud and clear. In order for the Lord’s will to come to fruition required for this good and faithful servant to prepare for the journey. As a wife, mother, and full-time employee, going back to school was a monstrous task. There were many sleepless nights and stressful moments but God was with me every step of the way.
I graduated in September 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Phoenix. As I walked across the stage I envisioned myself walking on a dusty road that was instantly converting itself into a paved road with directional opportunity signs. Through my educational journey, I allowed myself to prepare for the actualization of God’s will over my life.

Prayer: Father God, too often higher education is not a message ingrained in the minds of Hispanic children. Socioeconomic barriers frequently prevent the dream of higher education to come to fruition. The dream can become a reality through our collective actions. We ask that you continue to pave the way for all, young and old, to reach a higher level. We ask for your guidance as we help develop new and future mentors that will hear the call. In your name we pray, Amen!

Tenía un millón de excusas de por las cuales el obtener una educación superior no era el camino correcto para mí. Me sentía derrotada por las circunstancias de mi pasado y yo había renunciado a mi futuro. Un día mi jefe me dio un ultimátum: “Vuelve a la escuela; Tu evaluación dependerá de esto” ¡Yo no podía creerlo! Volver a la escuela, ¿por qué yo? En ese momento hice una pausa y recordé que en mis oraciones le pedí a Dios que me usara, que me ayudara a realizar su voluntad sobre mi vida. Mis oraciones estaban siendo contestadas, pero no de la manera que había imaginado y tuve que tomar una decisión.
En ese día, el Señor usó a mi jefe para darme un mensaje que escuché alto y claro. A fin de que la voluntad del Señor se haga realidad, se hace necesario que esta sierva buena y fiel se prepare para la jornada. Como esposa, madre y empleada a tiempo completo, regresar a la escuela fue una tarea monstruosa. Tuve muchas noches sin dormir y muchos momentos de estrés, pero Dios estuvo conmigo en cada paso que di.
Me gradué en septiembre del 2012 con un bachillerato en comunicaciones de la Universidad de Phoenix. Mientras desfilé en la plataforma, en mi imaginación, me vi caminando por un camino polvoriento y frente a mi este se convirtió en un camino pavimentado con señales direccionales – oportunidad. A través de mi viaje educativo, me permití prepararme para la realización de la voluntad de Dios sobre mi vida.

Oración: Dios Padre, con demasiada frecuencia la educación superior no es un mensaje enraizado en la mente de los niños hispanos. Las barreras socioeconómicas con frecuencia impiden el sueño de la educación superior se hagan realidad. El sueño puede hacerse realidad a través de nuestras acciones colectivas. Te pedimos que sigas allanando el camino para todos, joven y viejo, para llegar a un nivel superior. Te pedimos Tu orientación a medida que ayudamos a desarrollar nuevos y futuros mentores que escucharan la llamada. En su nombre oramos, ¡Amén!
