Mirrors of God…reflect and are (actualized)! Elivette (Elly) Mendez Angulo
“Then the Angel showed me Water-of-Life River, crystal bright. It flowed from the Throne of God and the Lamb, right down the middle of the street. The Tree of Life was planted on each side of the River, producing twelve kinds of fruit, a ripe fruit each month. The leaves of the Tree are for healing the nations. Never again will anything be cursed. The Throne of God and of the Lamb is at the center. His servants will offer God service—worshiping, they’ll look on his face, their foreheads mirroring God. Never again will there be any night. No one will need lamplight or sunlight. The shining of God, the Master, is all the light anyone needs. And they will rule with him age after age after age.” from Revelation 22: 1-5
To actualize means to make real or to portray realistically…to become actual! Reflections of God, that is what Jesus followers are called to be. I don’t know how many of you attended General Synod 29 in Long Beach, or much less how many of you caught the action behind the scenes…
Sunday’s theme was “Everyone Mirrors God,” but this was not a regular Sunday, this is General Synod Sunday! Worship is…different. Local people who aren’t able to attend daily services with us, come! Local churches attend as congregations! And there’s the Eucharist with the Big E. And well, everything is what you expect at a typical Sunday service at your local church, except it’s a service that tries to honor all our different church traditions! Imagine…the little church that meets in a small space and the big church, services that have pipe organs and those with jazz music, the UCC in all of it’s differences in one place! All in all this is a big service with a lot of small necessary pieces.
On this day, God chose to remind some of us that we really are mirrors of God reflected for the world to see! A necessary piece was missing. Some of us spent time running through the Exhibit Hall begging to see exhibitors mirrors and then, begging to borrow “The CHOSEN MIRROR” for the next 3 hours! God really has a sense of humor, because it wasn’t till half-way through the service that we realized that THIS was the day that we heard all about how WE are Mirrors God!

It was with a renewed spirit and purpose that we sang: “we are mir-rors of the face of God, we are mir-rors of the face of God…we are mirrors, we are mirrors, we are mirrors of the face of God!”
Prayer: God make us more like you. Compassionate to the need of others, and full of your love. Amen.

Espejos de Dios… reflejan y son (actualizado)! Elivette (Elly) Méndez Angulo
“El ángel me mostró un río limpio, de agua de vida. Era claro como el cristal, y salía del trono de Dios y del Cordero.En medio de la calle principal de la ciudad y a cada lado del río, crecía el árbol de la vida, que da fruto cada mes, es decir, doce veces al año; y las hojas del árbol sirven para sanar a las naciones. Ya no habrá allí nada puesto bajo maldición. El trono de Dios y del Cordero estará en la ciudad, y sus siervos lo adorarán. Lo verán cara a cara, y llevarán su nombre en la frente. 5Allí no habrá noche, y los que allí vivan no necesitarán luz de lámpara ni luz del sol, porque Dios el Señor les dará su luz, y ellos reinarán por todos los siglos.” from Apocalipsis 22: 1-5
El actualizar algo significa “hacer real, modernizar… ¡para convertirse en una realidad, en una verdad! Y es esto precisamente lo que los(as) seguidores(as) de Jesús están llamados(as) a ser, una Reflexión de Dios. No sé cuántos de ustedes asistieron al Sínodo General 29 en Long Beach, y mucho menos cuántos de ustedes se percataron de la acción detrás del escenario…
El tema del domingo fue “Todos(as) reflejamos a Dios”, pero este no fue un domingo común y corriente, este fue ¡Domingo en el Sínodo General! La adoración es… diferente. ¡La gente local que no pudo asistir junto a nosotros los servicios diarios, vienen! ¡Las iglesias locales asisten como congregaciones! Y ahí está la Eucaristía con la E grande. ¡Y así, todo es lo que se puede esperar de un servicio típico de domingo en su iglesia local, excepto que es un servicio que trata de honrar todas nuestras ¡Iglesias locales diferentes tradiciones e idiosincrasias! ¡Imagínese… la pequeña iglesia que se reúne en un espacio pequeño y la gran iglesia, servicios que tienen órganos de tubos y aquellos con música de jazz, la UCC en todas sus diferencias en un solo lugar! En conjunto este es un gran servicio con una gran cantidad de pequeñas y necesarias piezas.
¡Este día, Dios lo escogió para recordar a algunos(as) de nosotros(as) que realmente somos como espejos que reflejan la imagen de Dios para que el mundo pueda ver! Una pieza necesaria nos faltaba ese día. Algunos(as) de nosotros(as) pasamos nuestro tiempo corriendo de un lugar a otro en la Sala de Exhibiciones rogándole a los que exhibían sus materiales que nos dejaran ver sus espejos y a continuación, rogándoles que nos nos prestaran por las próximas tres horas, ” el espejo ELEGIDO “! ¡Dios realmente tiene un gran sentido del humor, ya que no fue hasta la mitad del servicio que nos dimos cuenta de que ESTE era el día en que escucharíamos todo acerca de cómo NOSOTROS somos Espejos de Dios!
” I- mag -o De- i, I- mag -o De- i , nacidos(as) en la ima-gen de Dios somos nosotros(as) . I- mag -o De- i, I- mag -o De- i , llamados(as) a com -pas -ion , nacido(a) para ser libre ” . ¡Fue con un espíritu y propósito renovados que cantamos: “somos espejos del rostro de Dios, somos espejos del rostro de Dios… que somos espejos, somos espejos, somos espejos de la cara de Dios!”
Oración: Dios haznos más como tú. Compasivos(as) a la necesidad de los demás, y llenos(as) de tu amor. Amén.
