Our theme for 2014 said “Let’s Dream: Dare to Receive Anointing to Move on».  The first step to receive has to do with waking up from our sleep and making our dreams real!  Let’s wake up and embrace our brothers and sisters by giving them an extravagant and welcoming LOVE!  Others can take away all our dreams, but not our determination to Love as Christ Loved us! “Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn’t love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that.” Ephesians 5:1-2 MSG

 

Nuestro lema para el 2014 “Soñemos:  Atrevete a recibir uncion para moverte”  El primer paso para recibir tiene que ver con el despertar de nuestro sueño y hacer nuestros sueños realidad! Despertemos y abracemos a nuestros hermanos y hermanas, dándoles un amor extravagante y acogedor! Otros pueden llevarse todos nuestros sueños, pero no nuestra determinación para Amar como Cristo nos amó!  «Mira lo que Dios hace, y entonces hazlo, al igual que los niños (as) que aprenden de sus padres el comportamiento apropiado. Ayer nuestra iglesia celebró el Dia de los Reyes.  Nuestro pesebre estaba lleno de esperanza y nuestros hijos e hijas recibieron regalos.  Puedo mencionar a Nathan, vino con su papa.  Ver su carita de sorpresa y de gozo, atesorar lo que recibió, priceless. Cuando le pregunté si habia recibido regalos me dijo “Estan allí, los guardé” Entonces tenemos que hablar de Izza, pretendimos que no la vimos, preguntamos si alguien sabia dónde estaba ella y contestó con una gracia “Estoy aqui; soy Izza”.  Ella estaba lista, su mente estaba en ese regalito que iba a recibir.  Ambos tomaron posesión de lo que recibieron y lo atesoraron.  Esto es precisamente lo que Dios espera de nosotros y nosotras, que cuando nuestro nombre sea llamado respondamos pronto y aceptemos lo que El nos ha regalado:  Vida eterna, libertad, una vida llena de sorpresas y de esperanza.  Jesucristo en nuestro corazon, nuestra mente y nuestra alma!  Feliz Dia de los Reyes mi gente!

Yesterday our church celebrated the Día de los Reyes. Our manger was full of hope and our children received gifts. I can mention Nathan, came with his father. See his face of surprise and joy, he treasure what he had received, priceless! When asked if he had received gifts he said «They are there, they are saved. » So we have to talk about Izza, we pretended we did not see her and asked if anyone knew where she was and she replied with grace «I am here, I am Izza». She was ready, her mind was in that gift that she was to receive. Both Ambos took possession of their gift and and treasured it. This is precisely what God expects of us, answer to His calling and accept what he has given us: eternal life, freedom, a life full of surprises and hope. Jesus Christ in our heart, our mind and our soul! Feliz Dia de los Reyes my people!

Anoche despedimos el 2013 intencionalmente, abriendo nuestras mentes y corazones a la realidad de nuestras vidas y circunstancias.  Que este nuevo año 2014 sea uno lleno de sueños realizados y que aprendamos a Vivir la Vida en el Espiritu de Dios dejando que sea este el que nos guie y nos guarde mientras nos movemos a adorarle.

Mateo 3: 3 -12

“En aquellos días vino Juan el Bautista predicando en el desierto de Judea,  y diciendo: Arrepentíos, porque el reino de los cielos se ha acercado.Pues éste es aquel de quien habló el profeta Isaías, cuando dijo:  Voz del que clama en el desierto: Preparad el camino del Señor, Enderezad sus sendas. Y Juan estaba vestido de pelo de camello, y tenía un cinto de cuero alrededor de sus lomos; y su comida era langostas y miel silvestre. Y salía a él Jerusalén, y toda Judea, y toda la provincia de alrededor del Jordán, y eran bautizados por él en el Jordán, confesando sus pecados. Al ver él que muchos de los fariseos y de los saduceos venían a su  bautismo, les decía! Generación de víboras! ¿Quién os enseñó a huir de la ira venidera?  Haced, pues, frutos dignos de arrepentimiento,  y no penséis decir dentro de vosotros mismos: A Abraham tenemos por  padre; porque yo os digo que Dios puede levantar hijos a Abraham aun de estas piedras.  Y ya también el hacha está puesta a la raíz de los árboles; por tanto, todo árbol que no da buen fruto es cortado y echado en el fuego.  Yo a la verdad os bautizo en agua para arrepentimiento; pero el que  viene tras mí, cuyo calzado yo no soy digno de llevar, es más poderoso que  yo; él os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego”

Cuando leemos esta historia podemos resaltar varias cosas de importancia, Juan el bautista se encontraba haciendo lo que sabía hacer, bautizar personas, mientras estos eran inspirados a confesar sus pecados.  En el lugar se encuentran los fariseos, estos eran un grupo derivado del Judaísmo, sucesores de los Hasidim, una religión ortodoxa dentro del judaísmo.  Juan les habla a ellos de una manera muy significante, los denuncia, y pretende desenmascararlos ante los presente, entonces les dice “¡Generación de víboras! Ósea, les llama culebras. ¿Quién os enseñó a huir de la ira venidera? les pregunta por que evaden la realidad   Haced, pues, frutos dignos de arrepentimiento, les exhorta a que hagan algo constructivo con sus vidas, que demuestren que son buenos seres humanos.   y no penséis decir dentro de vosotros mismos: A Abraham tenemos por  padre; porque yo os digo que Dios puede levantar hijos a Abraham aun de estas piedras. Les dice que dejen de utilizar el nombre de Abraham para vanagloriarse, porque de estas piedras Dios puede levantar personas dignas de ser sus hijos.  Y ya también el hacha está puesta a la raíz de los árboles; por tanto, todo árbol que no da buen fruto es cortado y echado en el fuego.  Les explica que aquel que no sirve para nada debe ser desechado. Yo a la verdad os bautizo en agua para arrepentimiento;  Les explica que él hace la obra inicial, la cual es ayudar a que las personas reconozcan sus pecados y se bauticen como símbolo de arrepentimiento. pero el que viene tras mí, cuyo calzado yo no soy digno de llevar, es más poderoso que yo; él os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego.   Entonces hace saber que quien viene detrás de él hará algo mucho más grande porque él es quien tiene el poder. 

La pregunta es qué significa bautizar en Espíritu Santo y fuego,  muchas personas interpretan esto como un momento de pentecostés, lo asocian con hablar en lenguas y danzar en el espíritu.  Pero también puede haber otra interpretación, igual de valida,  si pensamos un momento en la función del espíritu santo, sabemos que la principal es redargüir, según el diccionario redargüir es “utilizar un mismo argumento contra la persona que lo empleó con anterioridad”  en otras palabras enfrentarnos con nosotros mismos.  Enfrentarnos con nosotros mismos significa comprender, sin poder negar lo que hemos hecho, prácticamente es como si nos pusieran un video de nuestros actos.  Si Jesús, quien viene detrás de Juan es capaz de hacer algo así, los fariseos ya no podrán escapar de quienes son.  El espíritu santo y fuego es una amenaza para ellos.   Como muestra, podemos ver la parábola del publicano y el fariseo, en este caso el publicano era mateo, Jesús lo encontró en el camino haciendo su función de recolectar impuestos, alrededor habían fariseos, entonces Jesús habló; en Lucas 18: 10 -14 Dos hombres subieron al templo a orar: uno era fariseo, y el otro publicano.  El fariseo, puesto en pie, oraba consigo mismo de esta manera: Dios, te doy gracias porque no soy como los otros hombres, ladrones, injustos, adúlteros, ni aun como este publicano; ayuno dos veces a la semana, doy diezmos de todo lo que gano.  Mas el publicano, estando lejos, no quería ni aun alzar los ojos al cielo, sino que se golpeaba el pecho, diciendo: Dios, sé propicio a mí, pecador. Os digo que éste descendió a su casa justificado antes que el otro; porque cualquiera que se enaltece, será humillado; y el que se humilla será
enaltecido.  

 Justo en este momento Jesús pone un espejo frente a los fariseos, el espíritu santo los redarguye con la realidad de quienes son.  Pero Juan había dicho que también vendría el fuego, según el diccionario la definición de fuego es la combustión de una   materia que produce desprendimiento de luz y calor. Sabemos que todo lo que pasa por el fuego es purificado, y no creo que haya sido casualidad que Juan haya puesto lo que Jesús traería en este orden, queda claro que para ser purificados primero tenemos que primero ser redargüidos, en otras palabras, después que el espíritu santo hace su labor, viene el fuego a purificarnos. 

Ahora bien, la pregunta más importante de toda esta lección es cómo podemos aplicar esto a nosotros mismos, como podemos traer esta historia de tantos años atrás, y que sea de beneficio a nuestras vidas en el 2013.  Es importante aceptar aunque no nos guste, que así como los fariseos eran una rama del judaísmo, nosotros somos una rama del cristianismo.   ¿Sera que sin darnos cuenta actuamos como los fariseos? apuntamos el dedo, contra todo hermano y hermana que no sea miembro del grupo con el que nos asociamos o identificamos.  Vamos delante de Dios dándole las gracias, porque no somos como ese negro(a), como ese ilegal, como ese gay, como ese borracho(a), o como esa analfabeta.  Buscamos ser exaltados(as) y olvidamos que dentro de nuestra propia humanidad, somos tan pecadores como cualquier otra persona.

 Más aun, cuando los “Juan bautista” de hoy en día, me refiero a nuestros líderes espirituales, nos ayudan a encontrar el camino, creemos que ya el trabajo está hecho, no nos esforzamos por dar frutos, que demuestren que somos personas buenas, personas que se esfuerzan cada día por crecer y ser mejores. 

Para concluir me pregunto  si de verdad hemos nosotros aceptado las enseñanzas del maestro Jesús.  Porque aceptarlo no es solo pregonar que somos sus hijos como hacían los fariseos con Abraham, porque de Dios puede levantar hijos de las piedras.

 Es importante entender que no tenemos un pase VIP por pregonar que somos sus hijos, más aun si no damos frutos que demuestre que somos personas constructivas y de bien, seremos olvidados, desechados, no tendremos ningún legado, seremos los fariseos del siglo 21. Recordados como un grupo de gente que se derivaba del Cristianismo llenos de hipocresía y nada más.    Tal  y como dijo Juan, después del primer paso, comienza el espíritu santo a redargüirnos a través de las enseñanzas que Jesús dejo para nosotros, es entonces que debemos pasar por el fuego, purificarnos, ser mejores vecinos, mejores hermanos, mejores feligreses, mejores parejas, mejores miembros de la sociedad, en fin ser mejores seres humanos.   Solo así podremos dar muestra de que vivimos lo que profesamos que Dios es nuestro padre y Jesús nuestro maestro y que cada día tenemos la esperanza de que seremos bendecidos y  bautizados con espíritu santo y fuego. 

Cuando hablamos de Adviento, hablamos de la oportunidad de compartir, prepararnos, celebrar la llegada de nuestra esperanza, de nuestra paz, de nuestro gozo, de nuestro amor.  Que mejor manera de comenzar nuestra temporada de Adviento que compartiendo las palabras de personas allegadas a nosotros y nosotras.  Personas que pueden celebrar el espiritu de Navidad, el poder de esta epoca desde sus respectivas tradiciones religiosas y espirituales. 

Hoy compartimos una reflexión de una mujer catolica, una mujer llena de fe y de amor.  Una mujer de Dios que vive en Puerto Rico con su hijo Kevin.  Esta reflexion la escribe Dioseline Angulo Matos:  

Juan 3:16 “Porque de tal manera amo Dios al mundo que ha dado a su hijo unigénito para que todo aquel que en él cree no se pierda más tenga vida eterna”

Compartir es una palabra que va a más allá de solo mencionarla.  Cuando compartes tienes que hacerlo de corazón y dar de lo que tienes y no de lo que te sobra.   Es por esto que Dios nos amó tanto que dió a su hijo unigénito para que todo el que en él cree no se pierda más tenga vida eterna.  Cuánto estas dispuesto tu a compartir con Dios? Son tantas las cosas que puedes  compartir algo simple como un hola, una sonrisa, un abrazo, una sobrilla si ves a alguien mojándose bajo la lluvia.  Puedes compartir tu pan nuestro de cada día con el que pide en la luz.  Dándole una botella de agua, o algo de comer. El compartir no tiene límites, sexo, orientación sexual, edad, religión.  Se libre y aprende a compartir, esta es la unica manera en que puedes compartir a Dios.

 

When we talk about Advent, we talk about the opportuity we have to share, to be prepare, to celebrate the coming of our hope, our peace, our joy, and our love. And what better way to begin our season of Advent than to share the words of people close to us.  People that celebrate the spirit of Christmas, the power of this season from their religious traditions and spiritual perspectives.    

Today we share a reflection of a catholic woman, a woman full of faith and love.  A woman of God who lives in Puerto Rico with her son Kevin.  This reflection was written by Dioseline Angulo Matos:

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Sharing is a word that goes beyond just a mention. When you share you have to share from your heart and give what you have and not what you have left. That is why God loved us so much that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life . How much are you willing to share with God? There are so many things you can share something simple as a hello , a smile, a hug, an umbrella if you see someone getting wet in the rain. You can share your daily bread with people that asked in the street light. Giving a bottle of water or something to eat. The sharing must be limitless and it should not be limit by sex, sexual orientation, age, or religion.  Be free and learn to share, this is the only way we can share God.

Giving Thanks to GOD

Iglesia mia…!  Diariamente le doy gracias a el Señor por ustedes, individual y como congregación.  Yo se que DIOS esta con ustedes al igual que conmigo. Cuando yo regrese a los Estados Unidos tengo tanto que contarles, pero hoy les quiero contar una historia. Pastora Mami asked me weeks ago to think about the notion of giving thanks in prayer.  And, those of you that know me know that I believe in prayer!  As I thought about it, my mind became cluttered with all the crazy things that I have prayed for in my life. I mean, I have been a praying person since before I understood that God really hears all.  As a child I prayed for the puppies in the yard, the pigs in their pens, the people without shoes en El Viejo San Juan.  I prayed that Abuelo Victor would give me a bigger mango than he gave to Luis, that my father would act right, and that Abuela Yeco would take us to the beach.  When Abuela died I prayed that my father would stay… I am sure that you also have a dossier full of prayers.

God’s covenant with Abraham

As I grappled with BOTH the consequential and inconsequential prayers of my life I realize that God’s covenant with Abraham includes me. And every prayer that I pray is being fulfilled, because my covenant is not with an imaginary god, but rather with The GOD of covenant.  God made a pact. And in that covenant we, you and me, we are included.  The Psalmist in Psalm 105:6 talks about Abraham, he speaks of the Abraham from the children’s song many of us remember from Sunday School ([you can stand and sing):

I know todays sermon started with a song, I want you to prepare yourself, because its going to continue in song and end in praise! This weeks sermon is titled: Giving Thanks to GOD.

 God’s covenant includes you

So thank GOD for your prayers answered and unanswered, because the God that we believe in has already included us in all that his promise entails. Sometimes when we pray we forget to thank God for what we have prayed. For those of you who are like me and need a reminder…, There is a gospel song called «God has not forgot» by Tonex.  In this song Tonex reminds us that sometimes when we pray, even those inconsequential prayers God remembers and we need to thank Him. Not for granting what we’ve asked for but for listening to us.  See, those prayers that we think have not been answered, God heard us when we spoke them. Those prayers in our hearts that we’ve put out there into the atmosphere that we have prayed in our hearts but never mentioned out loud… GOD heard those as well.

No, REALLY

Today I thank God because the prayers of my heart that I did not think were heard, that I thought were left unanswered God answered.  When I graduated high school I wanted to travel and see the world but I wanted God to open a place for me and have it ready! I forgot those prayers, but GOD remembered. A few weeks ago my church here in Indonesia celebrated their Anniversary.  During their anniversary they read their church history out-loud…the good and the bad.  And I was asked to give a prayer of thanksgiving, and I can honestly say I cried the entire time!   

I realized that every part of that churches history God was using to remind me that S/He and I have a covenant. And that covenant is a promise that GOD continues to fulfill. See, I asked God to open a place for me back in the fall of 1995, and that is when the church opened.  The board of leaders that thought to open an English language, interdenominational church in Yogyakarta, Indonesia when they themselves were students trying to learn English…they had no idea that God was making ready a place for an AfroRican chica from a small Spanish speaking church in New Britain, Connecticut.  And when the government did not allow them to open an interdenominational church…God opened the church using a pastor who knew GOD had given them a vision.

 God answers our prayers.  We only need to say THANK YOU LORD!

Lord, We thank you. We thank you for giving us breath. We thank you for giving us rest. We thank you for giving us struggle. Creator, we thank you for our prayers. Those we have seen answered, those we are still praying.  But God, we thank you much more so for those prayers you have not answered…you know best.  Lord, we want what we want, but you know our real needs.  Thank you.

«Come, let’s sing joyfully to the Lord. Let’s shout happily to the rock of our salvation. Let’s come into his presence with a song of thanksgiving. Let’s shout happily to him with psalms.» Psalm 95:1-2 GW

This psalm comes to mind now and again.  Are we singing to our God only in church on Sunday morning? Or, are we singing joyfully with songs of thanksgiving while doing work of justice to “those or them”, yes, the homeless, the incarcerated, the hurt, the abandoned, the rejected, the different, the one that others do not want near!  Then go and sing, and worship, then and only then go into his or her presence because salvation is collective, it is not an individual, isolated, inclusive way. Just saying!

Este salmo viene a la mente una y otra vez. ¿Estamos cantando a nuestro Dios solamente en la iglesia el domingo por la mañana? O, ¿estamos cantando con alegría con cantos de acción de gracias mientras se hacemos trabajo de justicia a «aquellos(as) o esos(as)», sí, los (as) deambulantes, los(as) encarcelados(as), los(as) heridos(as), los(as) abandonados(as), los(as) rechazados(as), lo(a) diferente, los(as) que otros(as) no quieren cerca !
